Continuing with our focus for this half-term, in the last few weeks Year 3 have concentrated on athletics both indoors and outdoors. The students have been participating in a wide range of athletic activities, developing their skills in throwing, jumping, and running.
In the throwing events, they practised target throwing, chest push, javelin, and shot put, learning to apply correct technique and maintain control. During the jumping activities, students enjoyed taking part in the speed bounce and long jump, where they were encouraged to improve their coordination, balance, and power.
As part of their field events, the children also took responsibility for marking and officiating the results within their own groups. This not only supported their understanding of how events are scored but also helped them develop fairness, accuracy, and teamwork.
We incorporated a variety of relay races, including those using reverse boards. The week concluded with endurance running, where pupils showed excellent stamina and resilience as they challenged themselves to complete as many laps as possible within a set time, developing an early understanding of pacing over longer distances.
In addition, we have also been focusing on basketball, with particular attention to ball control, grip, and the development of effective passing skills. Students worked through a series of progressive passing drills designed to improve accuracy, timing, and communication. Alongside this, we explored key vocabulary relevant to game situations, helping students broaden their understanding of the sport and the terminology used during play.
The students were also introduced to the fundamentals of shooting and dribbling, with an emphasis on maintaining spatial awareness. They were encouraged to think carefully about their positioning on the court, as well as how to move safely and effectively while keeping control of the ball. Additionally, students have begun to explore simple tactical concepts, such as using fakes or feints to become less predictable during game scenarios. This has helped them understand how strategic movement can create opportunities for themselves and their teammates.
Overall, these last few weeks the students have been developing both their technical skills and their understanding as well as building on their knowledge, helping them build confidence as they progress in basketball and athletics.
