Maths: marvellous multiplication ✖️

Back and refreshed after Christmas break, Year 3 have dived into our new maths topic: multiplication and division! We have recapped what we already learned last year, refreshing our knowledge of the 2s, 5,s and 10s, and remembering that multiplication can be represented with arrays of counters. We have also enhanced this knowledge by making arrays to show commutativity (we can switch the order and still have the same result)! For example, 3 lots of 5 = 15  and 5 lots of 3 = 15 too! We then started sharing and grouping amounts as a practical introduction to division.

Continuing with our focus for this half-term, in the last few weeks Year 3 have concentrated on athletics both indoors and outdoors. The students have been participating in a wide range of athletic activities, developing their skills in throwing, jumping, and running. In the throwing events, they practised target throwing, chest push, javelin, and shot put, learning to apply correct technique and maintain control. During the jumping activities, students enjoyed taking part in the speed bounce and long jump, where they were encouraged to improve their coordination, balance, and power. As part of their field events, the children also took responsibility for marking and officiating the results within their own groups. This not only supported their understanding of how events are scored but also helped them develop fairness, accuracy, and teamwork. Music

 In music this week we were thinking about how the timbre of instruments (the way they sound) contributes to creating a picture in the head of the listener. We listened to some of the Carnival of endangered animals by Debbie Wiseman and thought about how the music represents the animals. We had a go at moving around the classroom to the music pretending to be the animals which the children enjoyed a lot!

Geography

Today we started our first geography unit of work in year 3 and we are going to be looking at cities and counties. We started today by looking at the continent we live in of Europe and identifying some countries that we know in Europe. We found out that Italy looks like a boot and that some countries are landlocked. We had a go at using atlases to help us identify some of the countries in Europe and where they are.
